I was doing my weekly walk-through of the Target aisles and I noticed the shelves were already replaced and stocked with Valentine’s Day decor! Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Just when you thought all the holiday planning was over, you’re left wondering how to start preparing for all the Valentine’s Day family activities, Valentine’s class card exchange, and Galentine’s parties. In this article, I will share 15 (okay, truly, it is 16, but who’s counting) of our favorite simple and sweet Valentine’s Day family activities.

It’s as if just as one holiday season is ending, another has already begun. Trying to make Valentine’s Day special for your kids can feel overwhelming in the wake of the Christmas and New Year’s hangover (figuratively and literally)!
So, if you’re feeling a little lost, underprepared, or just looking for some fresh ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your family this year, I’ve got you! These family ideas are as simple and fun as our preschool activities.

- Mini mailboxes – Ever since I found these cute little tin mailboxes with flags, our kids have become obsessed with making Valentines for each other in the weeks leading up to February 14th. Whether it’s cards, artwork, or random little things they find around the house, my kids absolutely love putting things in each family member’s mailbox. There are tons of free printable coloring pages on Pinterest and of course, my favorite comes from Friend’s Art Lab. Print off a small stack (or order online) and leave a box of crayons next to it for your kids to come to any time during the month of February. You will be surprised how much they love having a themed set of coloring activities available whenever they are in a creative mood.
- Valentine’s Heart Craft – Looking for an easy heart-themed craft? Let your kids create these easy, colorful, and mostly mess-free hearts as little Valentines for family members. These beautiful hearts can also double as adorable decorations, and kids LOVE to see their artwork displayed! They also make a great Breakfast Invitation while you are busy preparing the next meal.

- 5 things you love about each family member – Grab a notebook and snuggle up with your little family. Go around the circle and let each family member say 5 things they love about each one of their family members. Keep your Kleenex nearby because this one can pull at the heartstrings.
- Cozy movie night – Snuggle up on the couch before the fire with a big family-sized blanket, some hot cocoa, and watch a movie! There are so many classics that are themed around love for young kids. We love “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown”, and “Lady and the Tramp”, and you can never go wrong with “Beauty and the Beast”.

- Game night – There’s no better time to throw your phones in the junk drawer and fully unplug than the holiday that’s focused on love and connection. Gather around the kitchen table and spend some intentional, focused time with your family playing some games. Rather than playing a quick round of Go Fish in between house chores, make this game night special and dedicate an entire evening to just playing games with each other.Here are our favorite board games for family game night.
- Read books about love and kindness– Reading is the ultimate way to spend meaningful, quality time together. Cozy up as a family and read books about love, caring and kindness. Our favorite Valentine’s themed book is “Words and your Heart”. You can even do the Valentine Story Retell with your preschooler to practice prompting and retelling stories.

- Sow seeds of love (AKA start an indoor garden) – There’s no better time than now to start your spring gardens inside. Find an empty egg carton and plant a mini garden with your kids. Teach them how to nurture, grow and love their little seeds. These little plants can eventually be transplanted to your outside garden in a couple of months!
- Bake a cookie bouquet – Baking in the kitchen with kids may sound like a mess. And guess what? It is – but it’s also so much fun! Baking is filled with sensory fun and it’s a great way to get your picky toddlers to try new textures and flavors! Whip up a quick batch of sugar cookies, let your kids go to town with decorating, stick some popsicle sticks in the bottom of them and bundle them up in a cute little cookie bouquet. This one also makes a nice gift!
- Heart-themed lunch – Nothing fancy here. Take your kids favorite lunch items and decorate and arrange them in a sweet way. Our kids love peanut butter and jelly! So we make our basic PB&J and simply use a cookie cutter to make little heart-shaped sandwiches. Serve with some strawberries, tomatoes or any red colored fruit or veggie and VOILA!
- Make chocolate candies – One of our favorite things to do as a family is cooking. And what better time to get creative and have some fun in the kitchen all together, than making something yummy and sweet for Valentine’s Day? Making chocolate candies is easier than you may think! Melt some chocolate, sprinkle a little festive Valentine’s sprinkles into the bottom of some fun heart-shaped silicone molds, pour the melted chocolate on top, and stick them in the freezer for a few hours! These are also fun to give as gifts.

- Valentine Pancake Party for Kids – Kids love a buffet. And buffets are such an easy way to set up a fun make-your-own pancake plate in the morning. Simply make pancakes (I love using a heart-shaped mold or cookie cutter) and then set out all sorts of fresh, healthy, and yummy toppings for your kids to decorate and top it off with!
- Deliver Valentines to your neighbors – Making valentines cards, chocolates or simply dropping off a meal to your neighbor is a great way for kids to learn about kindness, giving and showing acts of love to those around them!
- Exchange family Valentine’s cards – Decorating special little Valentines for each other is such an easy way to get your kiddos in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. It’s a great way to keep your child busy, engaged, and creating. And what better way than to teach them about giving as they practice their creativity skills.
- Focus on the true meaning of love – The best gift is each other. Reset the attention and focus of Valentine’s Day to spending quality time together. Even if you don’t do Valentine’s Day-themed activities, games or baking, just being together is what love is all about.
