What Are Runes?

Runes are the characters of the Germanic alphabets that were used for writing in northern Europe from around the 1st century AD until the adoption of the Latin alphabet. The runic alphabet is known as the Futhark, named after the first six letters: F, U, Th, A, R, and K. The word "rune" comes from the Proto-Germanic "runo" meaning "secret" or "mystery."

The original runic alphabet was the 24-character Elder Futhark common to all Germanic languages. As it spread, the futhark diversified into variants like the Anglo-Saxon futhorc and Norse fuþark used by different peoples. The Younger Futhark, with some additional characters, emerged around 800 AD.

While runes remained in use in Scandinavia alongside the Latin alphabet into the 16th century, their primary use was for short inscriptions, name brands, memorials and magical purposes rather than long written texts. The runes held symbolic and mystical value for the Norse in addition to being a writing system.

Odin & The Runes - Norse Mythology

According to Norse mythology, the runes were a sacred alphabet brought to humanity by Odin, the supreme deity.

The Hávamál, one of the poems of the Poetic Edda, contains a section where Odin describes hanging himself from Yggdrasil, the world tree, wounded by his own spear, in a shamanic ritualistic sacrifice for nine nights to gain the knowledge of the runes:

"I tasted the essence, sent from the source,
I started the chant from the hallowed hall.
Grasping the roots, I raised up runes,
With a scream, I caught their meaning."

So in Norse legend, Odin received the runes after enduring a ritual ordeal of initiation, and later passed this knowledge on to humanity. The runes were thus considered a divine mystery gifted by the chief god.

The Aetts

The aetts (or ættir in Old Norse) refer to the divisions of the runes in the Elder Futhark alphabet. The 24 runes were organized into three groups of 8 runes each, called aetts.

The division into aetts is believed to be quite ancient, possibly going back to the origins of the runic system. The reason for this tripartite structure is not known for certain, but it may have held numerical, cosmological or mystical significance.

Some theories propose the aetts were used for organizing initiation rites, magic spells or divination. Others link the three aetts to the Norse cosmological division of the universe into realms of the gods, humanity and subterranean beings.

In any case, the runes were clearly organized into these three groups of 8 by the Norse peoples, giving each aett a symbolic identity connected to specific Norse gods like Freyja, Heimdall and Tyr.

Frey's Aett - Runes With Meanings

Frey's Aett is named after Frey, the Norse god of fertility, prosperity, and peace. The interpretation of the runes in Frey's Aett are all generally related to these themes.
