Quick and Easy Chunky Crochet V-Stitch Afghan (Leslie's Lapghan) - Repeat Crafter Me (2024)

Quick and Easy Chunky Crochet V-Stitch Afghan (Leslie's Lapghan) - Repeat Crafter Me (1)

I reached out to my Facebook community the other day and to tell you about a new mommy friend, Leslie, who is about to fight a rare brain tumor for the second time 🙁 She goes in for surgery in about a week and I wasn’t sure if I had enough time to pull off an afghan but you guys came to my rescue and suggested a lapghan! This chunky v-stitch crochet blanket worked up extremely quickly. It took me about a weekend to complete but keep in mind that I have 3 kids so if I was able to give it my full attention I am sure I could have completed it within a day. I based my lapghan off of THIS PATTERN from Lacy Crochet. Below are the materials I used and how I altered the pattern. I also created a completely different border.

My finished lapghan measures 38×42 inches. I would have loved it to be longer (around 50-60 inches long) but I had a little yarn issue. When I began, I was envisioning a very cool and calming color scheme using the Pewter and Stone (blue/grays). Wouldn’t you know it, those colors were out of stock at my local Michaels AND out of stock online as well. Be sure to get enough yarn when beginning your project!

One skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease gave me almost exactly 6 rows. I only made 4 rows of each color and used about 3/4 of each skein. So if you are making the exact same blanket you will need 5 skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease (3 for the blanket and 1.5 for the border) and one skein of each color for each color stripe. One skein = one color stripe (approx.)

Materials:

– Size K Crochet Hook

– Super Bulky Yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Fisherman (the main cream color) and Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in Pewter, Stone, Sweet Grass, Goldenrod, Petal Pink, Clematis, and Velvet. This yarn is only available at Michaels Craft Stores. You can purchase it HERE online.

– Large tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet

V-stitch = DC+ chain 1+ DC all in the same stitch
Picot = SC +Chain 3 +SC in last chain, join to next stitch with a SC

Follow THIS PATTERN from Lacy Crochet except my starting chain count was only 93 instead of 113.

Here is how my colors alternated:

6 rows of cream
4 rows of pewter color
1 row of cream
4 rows of stone color
1 row of cream
4 rows of sweet grass color
1 row of cream
4 rows of goldenrod color
1 row of cream
4 rows of petal pink color
1 row of cream
4 rows of clematis color
1 row of cream
4 rows of velvet color
6 rows of cream

Feel free to keep making rows of color with one row of cream in between to make a the blanket longer.

Border:
With cream color
SC around entire edge two times. When you get to the corners SC+ chain 1+ SC all in same stitch.
Now you will use a Picot stitch for the 3rd border round.
SC, SC+ Chain 3+ SC in last chain (Picot), SC in next stitch, *SC, Picot, SC in next stitch, repeat from * all the way around.

Do your best on the corners 🙂 Luckily my picot stitches ended up on the corners almost every time. The one time I had to fudge it, I joined my picot in the same stitch… SC+ Chain 3+ SC in last Chain+ SC in same stitch as where I started (instead of the next). You could also add in or skip the SC between the picots if needed.

Remember my post the other day about How To Photograph your Crochet? A lot of you asked how to photograph an afghan. I hope the pictures below give you some ideas on how to stage it!

This chunky lapghan is soft, colorful, and will hopefully bring warmth and comfort to my friend during her recovery. If I can get my hands on more of this yarn I plan on making one for myself as well! A cozy crochet blanket is just what the winter season ordered 🙂
